Pagano: Homecoming Weekend and Intramurals

October 19, 2011

After a very busy and enjoyable weekend, it is nice to be able to sit down and reflect upon all the good times I have had! Two weekends ago was Homecoming Weekend. Parents, families, and alumni come in and the University schedules a very fun and exciting weekend. My friends who have graduated in the past two years came in so that was very exciting!

The weekend kicked off with a Household Life Mass on Friday where all the households on campus gathered together to participate in the Eucharistic celebration. After Mass, some friends and I went out to Applebee’s for dinner and caught the end of the local high school team’s football game. Later that night, there was a talent show. Students on campus auditioned and those who were accepted performed for the students and visitors. From what I saw, there seemed to be a lot of talent on this campus! It was a very enjoyable night, but it didn’t stop there. On Saturday, there was a St. Francis Festival on campus. At this festival, households set up tables to fund raise by selling food or household crafts. My household sold apple fritters, and they seemed to be in demand – we had a consistent flow of people the whole afternoon. It was fun setting up for it by preparing the ingredients and making the batter with all the guys in household. Selling them was fun as well. I always enjoy interacting with people, and what a better way to make someone happy by selling them some apple fritters!

In addition to the festival, there was a volleyball game, a rugby game, and other arts, crafts, and games to participate in. It also just so happened that the weather that weekend was absolutely gorgeous! Saturday evening, there was a Festival of Praise. It is a very popular event on campus where everyone comes together as the Body of Christ to worship and praise our Lord! After the Festival of Praise, an Irish band, Scythian, came in and put on a great show for everyone. The members of this band are alumni of Franciscan so they come every year for Homecoming Weekend. They do a great job getting the crowd excited and involved, which always makes for a good time.

That weekend was very busy and things didn’t settle down last week. I had three tests at the end of the week in Principals of Biblical Studies, Corporate Finance, and Western Civilization. This is midterms season on campus so all students are studying and preparing for them. Classes have been great so far this semester, especially my business classes. I am majoring in finance, and now that I am a junior, I am starting to take more courses specific to my major. It has been an affirmation of why I chose my major because I am very interested in what I am studying and enjoying them a lot.

Intramural sports are probably one of my favorite things to do here. There are four intramural seasons throughout the year. It starts with flag football and then volleyball in the fall semester. Basketball and ultimate frisbee are held in the spring semester. Right now, we are playing flag football. The regular season just ended and playoffs are this week. My team is doing very well; we are undefeated. I am excited for the post-season to see how things end up. I will keep you posted!

God Bless,
Chris
